What Fishing Codex is

Fishing Codex is a free fishing logbook app for iOS and Android, and a website where anglers publish parts of their logbooks for other anglers to read.

The app

You log a catch two ways: Fish On! runs a fight timer while the fish is on, or you drop a pin from the plus button. Either way the entry records the photo, the species, the method, the length and weight, the date and the place, plus the conditions of that moment: the moon, the wind, swell, rain and pressure, and the tide where the water is tidal.

Your catches become pins on a private map that only you see. Behind it the app builds your history: statistics per species, your best moon phases and seasons, your landing rate, your longest fights and your personal bests.

Conditions reads the day for any point you aim at on your map. Best fishing times looks around thirty days ahead and tells you, day by day, whether the weather lets you get out and how many of your own entries line up with it. The Species Codex keeps your own record for every species you have caught. Tracks record where you went, back up to your own account, and are visible to you alone.

You own a crew from your first minute, and the official Fishing Codex crew is there to join as well. Events run worldwide: competitions, challenges, meet-ups and guided trips. The app works with no signal once you have signed in once, and it runs in every language Stripe supports.

The website

fishingcodex.com is where anglers publish and where readers unlock. Two things get published. Entries are one real catch with everything that produced it, including its location. Local Intel is an angler's knowledge about an area or a fishery: the timing, the gear, the technique, getting in, and what a local angler knows.

Whoever claims or unlocks an entry receives its exact location on their private map in the app. The public map shows a wide area where anglers are active.

Every account can claim free entries every day.

The money

Fishing Codex takes the standard 15% fee, plus Stripe and card processing fees (anglers typically net around 80%). Payments go straight into the angler's own account.

The app's only purchase is App Pro, an optional subscription for the full forecasting. Entries are unlocked on the website, never in the app.

What makes it different

  • The conditions are filled in for you

Every catch gets its moon phase, its tide on sea water, and the weather and pressure for that place and hour. Photos imported from years ago get theirs too.

  • Your own catches are the yardstick

Open any entry and each coming day is read against that one catch: its tide, moon, feeding window and pressure. Best fishing times counts how many of your own entries line up with each day, beside a separate answer on whether the weather lets you get out.

  • It works with no signal

Once you have signed in, entries save on the phone first and sync when a connection returns. The logbook, the private map, tides and moon keep working offline.

  • Your exact places stay private

Your logbook is private, and nothing in it becomes public until you publish it, entry by entry. The public map shows only a wide area. The exact location of a published entry goes only to the person who claims or unlocks it.

  • Shared knowledge keeps its conditions

A published entry is the record of a real catch: the species, the method, the date, the tide, the moon, the weather and the place. Local Intel is an angler's written knowledge about an area, with no exact locations in it.

  • Crews and events are built in

Every account owns a crew from its first day. Events run worldwide, and a free monthly Species Slam is always open to every angler.

  • The core app is free

The logbook, the private map, tides, moon, a one-day forecast on every entry, crews, events and daily free claims cost nothing, with no card and no trial. App Pro is optional.

How it compares

Anglers keep their fishing in a few kinds of places, and each does something well. This is where Fishing Codex sits beside them.

A notebook or a spreadsheet
Simple, private and entirely yours. Fishing Codex keeps the same private record and adds the moon, the tide on sea water, the weather and the pressure to every catch, without you writing them down.
Fishing apps built around a public catch feed
Good for seeing what other anglers are catching. In Fishing Codex your logbook is private by default, the public map only ever shows a wide area, and the exact location of a published entry goes only to the person who claims or unlocks it.
Tide, weather and solunar apps
Good for a general forecast for an area. Fishing Codex has a forecast too, then reads each day against the conditions of your own logged catches, and keeps two answers apart: whether the weather lets you get out, and whether the day looks like a catch you made.
Forums and social groups
Good for conversation and quick advice. In Fishing Codex a shared catch keeps its date and conditions with it, Local Intel keeps an angler's knowledge about an area in one place, and only people who claimed or bought it can rate it.

Questions people ask

What is Fishing Codex?

Fishing Codex is a free fishing logbook app for iOS and Android, and a website, fishingcodex.com, where anglers publish entries and Local Intel from their logbooks for other anglers to read.

Is Fishing Codex free?

Yes. The logbook, the private map, tides, moon, a one-day weather and sea forecast on every entry, crews, events and daily free claims are free for every account. App Pro is an optional subscription that adds the 14-day forecast, the full Best fishing times range, advanced statistics and 10 GB of cloud backup.

Does Fishing Codex work without phone signal?

Yes, once you have signed in. Entries save on the phone first and sync when a connection returns, and the logbook, the private map, tides and moon keep working offline. Claiming and unlocking entries need a connection.

Who can see where I fish?

Nobody, unless you publish. Your logbook is private. When you publish an entry, the public map shows only a wide area, and the exact location goes only to the person who claims or unlocks that entry, on their private map in the app.

Can I bring in my old catches?

Yes. Import photos from your phone, or GPX, KML and CSV files, for example from a fishfinder. Each imported catch gets its moon phase, and its tide on sea water, worked out for the day it was caught.

What is on fishingcodex.com?

Entries and Local Intel that anglers have published from their logbooks. Some are free to claim, up to a daily limit. Others are unlocked once, by subscription, or with lifetime access to an angler's whole logbook. Entries are unlocked on the website, never inside the app.

How does Fishing Codex make money?

From App Pro, the optional in-app subscription, and from a fee on sales made on fishingcodex.com. On a sale, Fishing Codex takes the standard 15% fee, plus Stripe and card processing fees (anglers typically net around 80%), and the payment goes straight into the selling angler's own Stripe account.

Where does Fishing Codex work?

Worldwide. The app and the website run in every language Stripe supports, and the tide works anywhere on Earth. Anglers who sell need a Stripe account in a country Stripe supports.
