Fishing Codex — fishing logbooks, from the anglers who keep them.
Fishing Codex is a private fishing logbook app for iOS and Android, plus fishingcodex.com, where anglers publish entries from their logbooks — a real catch with its place, date, tide and conditions — and unlock entries from each other. The app is a free offline fishing tool; entries are unlocked on fishingcodex.com — never inside the app, and free entries can be claimed in the app or on the web.
A free private logbook for every catch — every entry on your own map, seen by nobody but you.
Drop in a photo or mark from 25 years ago — the app auto-fills the tide and moon for that exact date, time and place, so you know exactly when to fish it next.
14-day forecast + your Best Fishing Times for any location on earth, built on the same global weather and tide models major providers use — available offline from your last sync.
Set your limits — wind, swell, rain — and every day is rated by YOUR standards; with App Pro the app also re-ranks your own entries by the conditions you actually caught in.
Claim free entries and unlock entries from other anglers' logbooks — the exact location drops onto your private map with the real pin (free claims: 5-day access without App Pro).
Publish your logbook — get paid for what you already write down
There's enough fish in the ocean to share. Buyers unlock proven water closer to home, beyond the few locations they already know — and the exact location is never public: it's released privately, only to each person who claims or buys.
Share entries from your logbook when YOU choose — free-to-claim or paid. Free entries build your readership; paid entries earn when someone unlocks them.
The public heatmap shows only a rough ~10 km glow — never your exact pin. The exact location unlocks privately for the person who bought or claimed it.
Every unlock pays you directly — single entries from $2.99 (the buyer's forever), a live logbook subscription (monthly or yearly), or the whole logbook forever. Money lands in your own Stripe account; Fishing Codex never holds it.
Fishing Codex takes a 15% platform fee; payment-processing (Stripe) fees also apply — anglers typically net around 80%.
Entries are unlocked on fishingcodex.com with the same account as the app — the exact location appears in the buyer's app with your conditions and tips.
Your own entries, on your device, seen by nobody but you.
Public heatmap
A blurred ~10 km glow for browsing areas before you claim or buy, so you roughly know where a listing is — never an exact pin.
Feed
Public catch posts and photos; locations stay protected.
Published logbooks (fishingcodex.com)
Share entries from your logbook when YOU choose: free claim, single unlock, live logbook subscription, or the whole logbook forever.
Frequently asked questions
The basics
What is Fishing Codex?
Fishing Codex is a private fishing logbook app for iOS and Android, plus fishingcodex.com, where anglers publish entries from their logbooks — a real catch with its place, date, tide and conditions — and unlock entries from each other. The app is a free offline fishing tool; entries are unlocked on fishingcodex.com — never inside the app, and free entries can be claimed in the app or on the web.
Fishing Codex is new — why join before it’s big?
Honest answer: the community is still small — and that is exactly the opportunity. Early anglers build their readership first: every free entry claimed today is a reader who knows your name before the crowd arrives, and reviews and badges earned early are far harder to catch up on once bigger names are established. Publishing an entry also locks its surrounding ~500 m area for roughly 90 days against competing listings. Fishing Codex is being built to become the biggest fishing platform in the world, and the advantage of being early only exists while it is not there yet.
Is Fishing Codex free?
Yes. The Fishing Codex app is free to download and free to use: the private logbook, offline maps, worldwide tides, moon phase, a 14-day per-entry forecast, Best Fishing Times, navigation, and catch statistics are all free. The only in-app purchase is App Pro, an optional subscription for power features. Other anglers' log entries are unlocked separately on fishingcodex.com.
Does Fishing Codex work offline?
The logbook, map and forecasts work fully offline. Entries save to your device first and sync later, offline map tiles are free for every region worldwide, tides are computed on the device itself, and forecasts stay available offline from your last sync.
Do I need an account to browse?
No. Anyone can browse published log entries, anglers' public logbooks and the public map without an account. An account is needed only to claim or unlock an entry, and the same account works in the app and on the website.
Logbook, forecast & import
Does Fishing Codex have a weather forecast?
Yes. Every entry carries a 14-day weather-and-sea forecast for its exact location anywhere on earth — temperature, wind, swell, rain, pressure and more — built on the same global weather data the major forecast apps use, at no cost to you. It stays readable offline from your last sync, and days past the 14-day horizon fall back to sun and moon only. The forecast is free, on every entry.
Does Fishing Codex fill in the tide and moon for old photos?
Yes. Every entry gets its tide state and moon phase auto-filled from that exact date, time and place — including imported entries. Import a photo from 25 years ago and the app works out the correct tide and moon for the day it was taken, so you learn the best times to fish it. Tides are computed on the device itself for anywhere on earth and keep working offline.
Can I import entries from my fishfinder or another fishing app?
Yes. Fishing Codex creates entries from your phone photos, and it imports GPX, KML and CSV files — including waypoint exports from a fishfinder, chartplotter (Garmin, Lowrance, Simrad, Humminbird) or another fishing app — up to 10,000 entries in a single file import. Photo imports are limited to 200 per day, importing is free, and imported entries sync to the cloud.
What are Best Fishing Times?
Best Fishing Times is a roughly 30-day outlook of fishing-window predictions for your area — star ratings, moon phase, sunrise and sunset, and major and minor feeding periods — scored by sun, moon and weather and personalised to the conditions you care about and your own catch history. It is free, and the sun and moon parts stay usable offline.
Unlocking & claiming entries
Why can’t I unlock entries inside the app?
You cannot buy log entries inside the Fishing Codex app — entries are unlocked on fishingcodex.com, never inside the app. Free entries can be claimed in the app or on the web. The app's only purchase is App Pro, a subscription for power features. App-store policies for this kind of content keep paid unlocking on the website; sign in with the same account and every entry you unlock or claim syncs into the app automatically — the exact location, on your private map.
How do free claims work?
Every account gets 3 free claim slots for life — they never reset. Without App Pro, each claimed entry stays accessible for 5 days. Redeeming a friend’s invite code adds 3 bonus slots for both of you (one redemption per account). With App Pro, claims are unlimited and claimed entries stay on your map while the subscription is active.
How do logbook subscriptions work?
A logbook subscription is the angler’s logbook, live — a monthly or yearly payment that puts their subscription bundle plus all of their free entries on your private in-app map while it stays active, and every new entry they log into the bundle reaches you automatically. Cancelling stops future renewals, and you keep access until the end of the period you already paid for.
What is lifetime access?
Lifetime access is the whole logbook, forever — a single payment that grants permanent access to ALL of an angler’s entries, including every entry they log in the future.
What happens to entries I unlocked if the angler deletes their account?
Your access survives. A permanent snapshot of the entry is stored at the moment of purchase, so one-off and lifetime purchases — including their photos — stay yours even if the angler later withdraws the entry or deletes their account.
Can I get a refund?
Refunds are not given voluntarily; a refund is issued only where the law requires it. Purchases on fishingcodex.com are digital access to fishing knowledge, and sales are final.
The exact location is never public. The public map shows only a fuzzed ~10 km zone; the exact location unlocks privately for the person who unlocked or claimed the entry, shown on their private map in the app. The fuzz is deterministic and identical for every viewer — repeat visits, comparing accounts, or paying money can never buy a closer look at anyone’s real location.
What happens when my access to an entry ends?
When temporary access ends — an expired free claim or a lapsed subscription — the exact location is removed from your map. Permanent purchases (one-off and lifetime) never expire.
Publishing your logbook & getting paid
How do anglers get paid, and what are the fees?
Fishing Codex takes a 15% platform fee; payment-processing (Stripe) fees also apply — anglers typically net around 80%. Money goes directly to the angler's own Stripe account; Fishing Codex never holds it. Anglers connect their own Stripe account once, verify their identity on Stripe's own pages, and Stripe pays out to their bank on Stripe's payout schedule.
Paid entries start at $2.99 USD. You choose how to earn: a single entry (yours forever for the buyer), a live logbook subscription (monthly or yearly), or the whole logbook forever. Free-to-claim entries cost nothing and build your readership.
Which entries can be published?
An entry needs GPS coordinates and at least one photo, and the catch must have been captured with the in-app camera. The one exception is the early-adopter window, when entries imported from your own fishing history can also be published.
What is the 90-day early-adopter window?
For a one-time global window of 90 days — the same window for every user worldwide — anglers can also publish entries imported from their own fishing history, with at most 50 of these legacy listings live at a time. Once the window closes, legacy listing ends permanently and only entries captured in-app can be published.
What is the 500 m / 90-day area lockdown?
When an entry is published, the area around it (roughly 500 m) is locked for about 90 days — no other angler can publish a new entry there while the lock is active. This keeps published entries scarce and rewards active fishing. Withdrawing an entry ends its lockdown early, and once a lockdown expires, only catches logged after it ended can be published in that area.
How do reviews and angler badges work?
Only verified buyers and claimers can review an entry or an angler, one review per target. Angler tier badges are earned from review counts — Bronze at 3, Silver at 20, Gold at 100, Diamond at 1000 — and a separate Philanthropist badge (Sharer, Local Guide, Community Pillar) rewards anglers for the free entries they publish and the thanks they receive from the community.
App Pro
What is App Pro and what does it unlock?
App Pro is the app’s only in-app purchase — a monthly or annual subscription sold through the App Store and Google Play. It unlocks unlimited free claims that stay on your map while the subscription is active, following anglers (all their free entries land on your map automatically), advanced catch statistics, condition-matched entry ranking, and 10 GB of cloud photo backup (free accounts get 200 MB).
Is App Pro required to use the app?
No. The private logbook, offline maps, tides, forecasts, Best Fishing Times and statistics are free. App Pro adds power features on top, and its price is shown in your local currency inside the app.
How do I cancel App Pro?
App Pro is billed by Apple or Google, not by Fishing Codex. Cancel in iOS Settings → Apple ID → Subscriptions, or in Google Play → Payments and subscriptions. When Pro lapses, followed anglers’ free entries and entries claimed under Pro leave your map after a grace period, and claiming returns to the capped model.
Account & policies
How old do I have to be to use Fishing Codex?
Fishing Codex requires a minimum age of 13.
How do I delete my account or export my data?
Delete your account in the app (Me → Settings → Danger Zone → Delete account) or from your web account settings — deletion is full deletion, not deactivation. Export your data first from the app (Settings → Data → Data export).
